Principles of Manual Handling

More nurses and carers suffer handling injuries each year than any other workers. Yet the moving of people is fundamental to the work of a care home. This Level 1 qualification is aimed at those who carry out manual handling at work, introducing candidates to the risks of manual handling and the controls available.

 Who needs this qualification?

The course is directed at those handling residents in Residential and nursing care homes but is also appropriate for all employees who handle, boxes, mail and packages including both industrial and office workers.

Subjects covered

·         the process of manual handling (within the care home setting)

·         manual handling injuries and the activities which cause them

·         manual handling assessment and control options (including the use of a range of equipment )

·         responsibilities imposed by the manual handling operations regulations

Outcomes

On completing this qualification candidates will be able to:

·         identify the hazards of manual handling

·         identify the risks involved and controls available

·         identify what to expect from a manual handling assessment

SfC Common Induction Standard 3.2

Health & Social Care NOS/NVQ Units 216, 223, 243 & 360
